Two weeks from now, university students Zoe Waring and Holly Ayres will be trying to hold down their lunches somewhere in the Southern Ocean. They will be steaming from Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands to an area about 55 degrees south, on the edge of Drake's Passage – the "Bullseye". At that latitude winds and currents circle the globe like a fairground ride run out of control, growing ever wilder. The Southern Ocean narrows at Drake's Passage – the 500-mile stretch between Antarctica and South America, which funnels and accelerates the current.
